Discoveries in Goa & Karnataka. Part 2 - Heiko BleherIn the vicinity of the great water dam Haligri (known as Kelageri as well) a road crosses a tiny creek that apparently flows into the reservoir. It was my fifteenth netting location. When I was walking upstream in the slowly flowing, cloudy water with a rocky substrate two boys approached me and insisted on catching some fish for me. They caught several specimen of Devario aequipinnatus, Nemacheilus denisonii, Rasbora aff. daniconius (I’m positive that more than one, so far not described, species are being classified under this name). Later on, by the stream banks, I managed to net several species I haven’t met before during this journey – for example Puntius melanostigma (for some it’s a synonym for Puntius mahecola, despite the fact that they are two separate barb species. In 1876 Day described P. melanostigma found in the region of Wynaad Hills in Kerala and this fish has nothing to do with P. mahecola from Mahé described by Valenciennes in 1844). I found P. pookodensis for the first time. I came across P. bimaculatus there as well.
The article published in the previous issue of the magazine acquainted us with a probable evolution of parental care in fish. This text describes various types of vivipary in rays, sharks and several families of bone fishes in a greater detail. We will find out that there are significant differences between vivipary in cartilaginous fishes and bony fishes with regard to spawning and development of the embryo.
Elassoma evergladei - Dr Hubert Zientek
Everglades pygmy sunfish (Elassoma evergladei) represent a North American ichthyofauna and are very rarely found in the Polish aquaria. They are coldwater fish, have low requirements as it comes to environmental conditions and are untroublesome in keeping. They easily spawn in captivity, yet raising their tiny offspring is not an easy task.
African species - Marcin Szmel
Africa is a continent of huge environmental diversity and that applies to its waters as well. Among African waters there are both flowing waters – from tiny and shallow creeks to the largest rivers of the world – as well as stagnant basins of varied sizes. Apart from the types mentioned above there are also flood plains, temporary pools and water basins that periodically change their volume – all those types combined together make a unique environmental mosaic. Naturally an abundance of fish species is a result of such a variety of habitats. Cichlids from Lake Malawi and Lake Tanganyika are the most popular ones in our tanks but it shouldn’t be forgotten that Africa offers many more fish species!
How snakes makeing doesn't be etten. Part II. - Witold Borkowski
The second part of the article describes snake defence strategies. Some of them may be very cunning and surprising!
Discus fish judging - Andrzej Sieniawski
This study’s aim is to discuss selected issues that an aquarium hobbyist may find helpful with respect to proper discus fish judging. It’s especially important in case of fish one intends to keep in his / her own tank. The author discusses in detail ten aspects of judging that Polski Klub Miłośników Dyskowców (Polish discus club) regards as binding.
Fish ethology - Archocentrus nigrofasciatus and Poecilia reticulata - Marcin Graczyk
Fish ethology – being a science – studies fish behaviour in a natural environment. Accurate and non-invasive study of aquatic organisms, especially those tiny ones or these found in unusual habitats is very difficult. Often it’s hard to define why a population dies out in certain conditions and flourishes in another. What causes it – behaviour, anatomic features or physiological features? Anatomy and physiology are easily measurable but behavioural study demands a long-term observation. The research described below aimed at finding out how selected environmental factors, such as: substrate colour, type of substrate and food or water circulation influence chosen behavioural aspects. The observation described below was limited to analysis of such behavioural aspects as activity level, staying in a shelter, aggression, readiness to spawn and shyness. Convict cichlid (Archocentrus nigrofasciatus) and guppy (Poecilia reticulata) were subject to all tests described below. All experiments were carried out in especially prepared tanks..
