Very often the non-infectious diseases, caused by bad environmental conditions and feeding improper for a given species become a source of problems in breeding aquarium fish. In such cases applying medications will not only be unhelpful but may also burden the fish’s organism with products of medication metabolism.

Tourists that chose to sped their summer holiday in an active way often forget that unlike animals from the northern part of Europe, creatures living in the South of the continent may pose a threat to the carless hiker’s health or even life. (...) We all know the species that is found in our country perfectly well – common European viper (Vipera berus). Peninsulas in the South are inhabited by several species of vipers. The common ones include: asp viper (Vipera aspis) and horned viper (Vipera ammodytes). (...) Among the grass and bushes of the open, sunny spaces one can come across Mediterranean black widow (Latrodectus tredecimguttatus), a cousin of the infamous black widow found in America.(...) Scorpions are another group of invertebrates. (...) Two species from the Buthidae family can pose a real threat: Buthus occitanus and Mesobuthus gibbosus. (...) The former of the two species is more venomous than the latter. It is actually the most venomous scorpion in Europe and is found in Balkan countries and well as in Turkey.

Most of the species from Apistogramma genus are characterized by the fact that very soft and relatively acidic water is indispensable to their proper development. However, it’s difficult for a statistical aquarium hobbyist to achieve such water parameters, especially when only hard tap water is at disposal. Nevertheless, there are two dwarf cichlid species that can be successfully kept in medium hard water with neutral pH. This includes two species that this article is devoted to: Apistogramma trifasciata (three-striped dwarf cichlid) and Apistogramma hongsloi.
