Definite Guide to Discus. Part I - Heiko Bleher
Heiko Bleher has written a fact file of the genus Symphysodon; how to identify each species; where they come from; bring representative images, also of their habitat; some of the variants across their range; what they feed in nature; which species live alongside and also how to set up a biotope aquarium.
There are now 3 (three) recognized species:
Symphydodon discus Heckel, 1840, Symphysodon aequifasciatus Pellgrin, 1904,
Symphysodon haraldi Schultz, 1960..
How to tame a beast? Moray in a freshwater aquarium. - Paweł Zarzyński
Moray is a fish characterized by a unique, snake-like body; it belongs to Muraenidae family. The family covers more than 200 scientifically described species, thirteen of which may also be found in brackish water as they live in estuaries. They may even swim into the river deltas that flow into the estuary. Four of these thirteen species are able to survive in fresh water and adapt to this kind of conditions. Below you will find an advice on proper methods of setting a tank for morays and ways of handling them.
Topmouth gudgeon – a plague of our waters - Hubert Zientek
Topmouth gudgeon (Pseudorasbora parva) is an extremely expansive species. It is naturally found in Far East but was introduced to Europe, most probably together with fry of several carp species. Anglers fight it and regard it to be a worthless fish „weed” or use it as a bait when catching predatory fish. Aquarium hobbyists are of the different point of view – they regard the species to be an interesting subject of observation in a coldwater aquarium.
Tropiocolotes steudneri - Magdalena Ryba
Tropiocolotes steudneri are tiny geckos inhabiting the Sahara desert. They reach 6 cm in length. Their body may be variously coloured – from pale yellow to dark brown with colourful spots. These geckos have thin tails marked with dark stripes. Depending on their mood and environmental conditions the body colouration may slightly change. Steudner geckos live in groups and their life span may even be as long as 5 years. Keeping these tiny geckos shouldn’t be troublesome, even if you are a beginner in the terrarium hobby.
Shrimps from Caridina genus - Monica Nowaczek
Shrimps from Caridina genus are subject to incomplete metamorphosis (hemimetabolism), that is, all stages of development in young animals occur in eggs and fry that hatches from the eggs basically resembles the adults, yet in miniature. Eggs are carried by the mother between her limbs for several weeks. After hatching, fry swims out of the mother’s appendages and is ready to live on its own. Is it possible to hatch shrimp eggs out of the mother’s organism? Is it possible to save „orphaned” eggs? Yes, it is. I’ll do my best to describe it briefly.
Perch (Perca fluviatilis) – a striped, smart fish - Maksymilian Przybylski (Asagoth)
European perch is one of the most numerous predators in Polish waters. In Poland it may be found in almost every type of inland waters and in the Baltic coastal zone. It appears the fish may be successfully kept in domestic coldwater aquarium as well. Below we discuss how an aquarium hobbyist should get prepared for keeping perch.
Scorpionfish (?) from Amazon (?) - Zbigniew Strzelecki
An unusual freshwater fish was introduced to the article author’s tank. It resembled marine scorpionfish and when the author saw it in a transport bag filled with water it stroke him that the fish resembled a small potato with a tail. It ate only small live fish and spent most of its time buried in a substrate. It was its way of hiding both from the predator’s and potential victim’s sight. It never pursued prey and never gave itself too soon. Its identity remains an aquarium mystery.
How selected discuss - Andrzej Sieniawski
Discussing selected issues that could help less experienced aquarium hobbyists in proper purchasing of discus is this article’s main goal. When purchasing fish you should assess their appearance and condition first. The article’s author discusses setting up a tank and quarantine of newly bought fish as well.
African classic – lyretail panchax - Marcin Szmel
Aphyosemion australe is found in western Africa waters. From an aquarium hobby point of view the region is well known in and quite well examined. If we had to try to define waters, in which this lyretail is found, we would have to classify them as „blackwater” or „clearwater”. This easily allows us to create conditions proper for keeping and breeding the fish. The fish in question is rather docile and sociable. Due to this fact it is recommended both for small tanks and multi-species aquaria. Unfortunately, the statement is partially false. So what kind of fish is lyretail after all? Suitable for small or larger tank? Species or community tank?
