Fish species I would like to present belongs to the group of African cichlids – Labidochromis sp. „hongi”. It is found in Lake Malawi and represents a relatively numerous group of mbuna cichlids. Mbuna and other groups of fish (Aulonocara, Utaka and the biggest mouth-brooders in the lake – the so-called predators) make up a wonderful underwater realm of beautiful colours and varied shapes.
The algae eater’s last moments - Andrzej Sieniawski
This article’s title may be a bit confusing because it’s predominantly describes river stingrays and large American cichlids and not the algae eaters. (...) We know of fish species that aren’t ranked among typical predators, nevertheless they don’t tolerate any companions in their vicinity. Fish from Amphilophus genus from North American waters is a typical group of species with such preferences. (...) Amphilophus citrinellus (Günther, 1864) known as Midas cichlid is one of the species belonging to this group. (...) Representatives of one of the stingray families (there are several of them) are characterised by the ability to live in entirely freshwater environment. It’s the Potamotrygonidae family that lives in rivers in the northern part of the South America. (...) Adolescent and adult stingrays can be housed together with peaceful fish of appropriately big size.
What? How? Why? - Andrzej Sieniawski
(...) It’s assumed that fish species kept in aquaria that have elongated pectoral and dorsal fins are an effect of purposeful selective breeding. These variations or morphs – as they are not separate species – have no counterparts in nature. (...) Carassius auratus, Poecilia reticulata, Gymnocorymbus ternetzi, Xiphophorus helleri, Puntius conchonius, Pterophyllum scalare, long-finned discus fish, Betta splendens.
Apistogramma – Colourful miniature beauties - Radosław Bednarczuk
Most of the species from Apistogramma genus may remind of colourful parrots due to their quarrelsome behaviour and assorted coloration. Some of them may seem pretty unremarkable – wait till the breeding period: they will take on beautiful coloration than. Not only the beautiful colours but also small size as well as very interesting breeding and social behaviour is their advantage. This all makes species from Apistogramma genus take the lead in cichlid species most often found in hobbyist aquaria.
AMANO – International planted aquarium competition 2009
“Nano konkurs” – competition’s results - Paweł Iglewski
Not necessarily in terrarium - Marcin Graczyk
Often we admire tropical amphibians, their interesting habits or amazing coloration. Some of them behave in an interesting way, some of the emit surprising sounds, yet the others astonish with their body shape or unbelievable ability to regrow lost body parts. However our domestic fauna (although not as rich in amphibians as tropical climate areas) can be amazing too. You can’t keep domestic amphibians in terrariums but they’re worth examining, even in order to understand the animals kept at home better.
How do the reptile „quarters” look like – a visit in zoo in Poznań - Pawel Domanski
The pavilion „Świat Gadów” (reptile world) was made accessible to the public in 1999. (...) A planted path leads through the whole pavilion’s length. Plants growing at both sides of the path are a typical rainforest vegetation. In this “jungle” 24 terrariums are located. The tour begins with exposition of Central European animals, here represented by the domestic European pond turtles and European green lizards. The latter are offspring of the specimen that have been kept in this very zoo for many years already. Subsequent tanks transfer us to the tropical climate zone.
European pond turtle , our domestic gem among reptiles - Wojciech Urynowicz
Photos by: Adam Kotowicz i Piotr Zadworny
In my opinion European pond turtle is one of the most beautiful reptiles from Emys genus. It’s worth mentioning that it’s the only turtle species found naturally in Poland – all this makes it a real gem of our herpetological fauna. (...) Appearance, distribution in Poland, threats.
In the exotic world of Nathan Gendreau. Part I - Sebastian Żmudzki
(...) I leave the depressing urban winter behind my back. I enter the realm of remote continents and exotic seas that never cease to be warm… I enter the magic world of Nathan Gendreau… (...) The exhibition is located on two levels. The first store encompasses terrarium and paludarium exposition. The ground floor that I would like to describe in this article encompasses the realm of water abyss, first and foremost of the oceanic type. In several dozens of tanks (two of the capacity of more than 5.000 L among them) more than one hundred aquatic animals can be observed.
Poecilia reticulata – magenta variation - Ryszard Patryas
Fancy guppy magenta variation was produced in 2003 in Romania and Thailand. It quickly interested guppy hobbyists from all over the world. Its characteristic trait is metallic multi-colour coloration. It proves high concentration of guanophores in skin of these fish. (...) Is magenta a new mutation? I don’t think so. Magenta is, in my opinion a mixture and accumulation of different traits, as in many other bred animals. (...) Genotype vs. phenotype, Moscow guppies vs. Magenta guppies.
