Some fish exhibit downright unbelievable resistance to the unfavourable environmental conditions. Sometimes it seems impossible that any aquatic organism would be able to survive in a given water reservoir.
Aquarium titbits - Michał Pręgowski;
Beauty in a micro scale - Michał Pręgowski;
South-American and African dwarf cichlids are regarded to be moderately demanding and very beautiful aquarium inhabitants. Lake Malawi biotopes. Part II. Cichlids inhabiting waters with sandy substrate - Mateusz Topolanek;
In my previous article I did my best to describe how cichlids from mbuna group living in rocky substrate parts of the Lake Malawi have adapted to their environment. These fish display strong territorialism, feed mainly on algae and have contrast-rich coloration – the latter aspect concerns both females and males. This time I would like to focus on more simply coloured fish that nevertheless have been equipped by Mother Nature with much more interesting scope of behavioural patterns. I will discuss fish that are found in deeper layers of the lake’s waters, that is directly above its sandy substrate. (...) Females from Lethrinops genus, a typical representative of „sand-dwelling” cichlids are a good example. Females are practically invisible against the grey, “building” sand when the aquarium is plunged into darkness after turning the aquarium lights off.
